According to the results of census of the population in 2003, Kien Giang is co-inhabited by 1.623.834 people, among them women make up 50,8%. 

Birth rate is 1,5%. The population density average is 259 persons/km2 and not equally distributed. The most densely populated area is Rach Gia town (2.074 persons/km2 ) and the lowest is Kien Luong district (100 persons/km2).
Kien Giang is home to several ethnic groups. They are the Kinh (Viet) 84%, the Khô-me(Khmer) 13%, the Hoa (Chinese) 3%

In 2003, Population at the working age is 993.553 people, accounting for 61,2% provincial population.
In 2003, work- force in employment amounted 832.859 with the annual average increase of 2,84%. Labor in economic lines of Agriculture-Forestry-Fishery is 73,64%.
Every year, people reaching the working age are about 45,000.
This situation requires the province focus on the following solutions to exploit plentiful labor resources of the province:
Encouraging investment more in agricultural and seafood processing industry as well as tourism to change labor structure.
Speeding up opening vocational high school and school of training technical worker to satisfy demand of labor forces for local economy as well as labor export.
